Outlaw Biology Symposium

Internet-Postcard1You’ve heard of DIY sensibilities in the art and music world, but in biology? The study of the life sciences, which has long been considered to be confined to bio labs of universities and pharmaceutical companies, is seeping into the hands of anyone with basic tools and a bit of gumption. The UCLA Center for Society and Genetics and Art/Sci is hosting a symposium called: Outlaw Biology? Public Participation in the Age of Big Bio. This two-day event kicks off Friday with a symposium with panels on topics such as Citizen Science, Open-Source Biology, and Recreational Genetics. Saturday is filled with workshops and exhibitions ranging from workshops where you can learn how to extra DNA from strawberries, a DIY instructional on constructing a webcam microscope, and how to use software tools for open source manufacturing and bioengineering.

Cost: Free
RSVPs are required

Really Free Market Bazaar & Potluck

Do you have junk that’s been collecting dust in your closet or food or food in the pantry that has remained untouched for months? The Arroyo Time Bank, a really cool community-based center where people barter their time and skills, is presenting its first Really Free Market Bazaar & Potluck. My friend Janine, who has had a big hand in the Eagle Rock Bowling and Drinking Club and works at the The Urban Craft Center, is organizing this fun and games free-for-all. If you like, bring stuff to barter with others. You don’t have to bring anything, just come out and have fun! All items and food will be up for grabs! In addition to bartering, there will be live musical performances from Earthworm Ensemble,  and presentations from community orgs such as The Arroyo Food Co-OpThe Funky Freegan Journal, and The Pasadena Post-Carbon Meetup.  This is a kid-friendly event with children’s crafts, so bring the tots!

Time: 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.

The Soft Pack is Playing Free Shows All Around Town!

The-Soft-Pack_1_

It takes a lot to evoke strong emotions out of me, but when I fall for something, I fall hard. I am super excited about The Soft Pack’s new album! This L.A.-based band is kicking off the release of their new album coming out February 2 with a day filled with 10 back-to-back free shows at random locations in L.A.! They’ve got a very roughly hewn sound that reminds me of lazy summer days filled with self-created clusterfucks and fierce parties in houses thrown by slackers on hillside estates. Think of The Strokes but with a fresher feel. Shows include a 1:00 p.m. show in Venice Beach with indie darlings Avi Buffalo and a free in-store at Vacation Vinyl at 8:30 p.m. with free Colt 45 Malt Liquors!
