Cowboys and Turbans: Viva La Taco Revolution

cowbyoysandturbansFunky days are back again with this marriage of Indian and Mexican fares. Cowboys and Turbans’ tandoori tacos are another great addition to LA’s street taco renaissance. This cozy nook adjoins the El Rey theatre on Wilshire Boulevard, which means the regular prices are geared toward drunken showgoers. They just opened another one in Silverlake on Sunset Boulevard, which is a hop, skip and a jump away from Pho Cafe. An ala carte street taco goes for $5 or $6. That’s a little steep in my sober opinion, but luckily they have a Tuesday Taco deal for our chipper Cheapsters. Tuesday tacos are $1 from noon to 5 p.m. On the discount list are chicken, fish and tofu, the shrimp never being relegated to dollar status. The fish is by far the best with tofu coming in a close second and chicken pulling up the rear. (Call me cheap but I didn’t spring for the shrimp.) With the money you save you can get an order of tasty masala fries to top off your meal. If you like Indian food then you should definitely get over here by your earliest available Tuesday.

Time: 1 – 5 p.m.

Tacos Mexico: One Sturdy Burro–I Mean Taco.Tacos_Mexico_Price

Nestled in a delta of traffic-strewn streets in Echo Park sits the ever- present Tacos Mexico. Offering one of the cheapest Taco Tuesday deals in town, Tacos Mexico is a steal at .59 cents each. This incredibly cheap taco is available from 8 a.m to 10 p.m. Holy guacamole! That’s breakfast, lunch and dinner, assuming you want to be buried in a tortilla someday. The varieties include carne asada, al pastor, cabeza, carnitas, pollo, and buche (tripe). I liked all of them with the exception of the buche, my favorite being al pastor. Overall the quality is fair, but for this price there’s not much to complain about. The sauce bar features a red sauce, a green sauce and pickled vegetables but beware of the roasted hot pepper. It’s really hot. So dine in and enjoy a telanovela or the jukebox that blasts out a random Mexican tune every 15 minutes. What more could you ask for?
