With their affordable gourmet sandwiches, sides and desserts, The Gastrobus roadside bistro pleases even the most finicky cheapster foodies.

The Gastrobus truly does embody the title “gourmet food truck.” Armed with co-founder Antonio Medina, who once worked for Wolfgang Puck, the food is not only beautiful but is high-end fare you normally would shell out major bucks for. Appetizers I sampled were the sweet potato fries ($2.50) and the organic beet citrus salad ($3). The fries were thick and crisp with a soft center, and the honey mustard dipping sauce served as the perfect complement. Next was the
out-of-this-world beet salad. I’m normally not a beet fan but this was the freshest salad I’ve ever had. The shredded beets were paired with cubed orange pieces and topped with a mild, light farmer’s cheese. The earthy meets citrus flavors proved to be a great remedy for the hot weather that day.
I then had the pulled pork with grits and pickled red onions ($6). This was a great savory dish, as the onions gave the tender meat a kick and the grits were a great choice to make the meat stand out. Had it been a sandwich with bread, the flavor of the meat and onions would have been diluted. Next I
had what would end up being my favorite item from the menu–the sweet potato hash ($3). The hash was like a flat cake and covered with caramelized onions and spiced yogurt. This had a very elegant flavor to it and made me feel like
I was eating at an expensive Beverly Hills restaurant. The dessert item was Limon Relleno ($3), which was a lemon halved and emptied and filled with berries and meringue. It was an airy and cool dessert but I almost didn’t want to eat it because it was so pretty!
