Buttermilk Bliss

The Buttermilk Truck’s variety of sweet and savory breakfast concoctions hits all the right spots.

IMG_2126Before the L.A. Street Food Festival, I heard the Buttermilk Truck’s name thrown around as being one of the more popular gourmet food trucks, but I wasn’t sure what they were about. All I had heard was they had red velvet pancakes–and I love red velvet anything.  The truck was my first stop and the first thing I had eaten all day, which was perfect because it turns out their specialty is breakfast.

The red velvet pancakes ($4 for the plain, $5 for the filled) were even more amazing than I had imagined.  IMG_2117The red velvet flavor is rich, the pancake moist and light and the chocolate chips add an unexpected twist.  And paired with the cream cheese whipped topping, you feel just like you’re eating a Sprinkles cupcake, but with less guilt because the red velvet pancakes are actually pancake bites and just big enough to satisfy you without being overwhelming. Next I tried the cake donuts ($2.50 for 3), deep-fried donut holes topped with powdered sugar and a cinnamon-vanilla glaze.  These were also pretty incredible. They were fried enough so that they were not IMG_2116greasy and the cake inside was fluffy. The last thing I tried was the Buttermilk Brick ($3.50): hash browns and two eggs over easy topped with chorizo gravy and a buttermilk biscuit.  This was the only dish that did manage to overwhelm me, but maybe only because I’m not a gravy fan and there was a lot of it, but the hash brown at the bottom–you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who could stop eating it.IMG_2115

All in all, I found this truck to be an inventive and very yummy take on breakfast. Their menu was limited to the three items reviewed above for the Street Food Festival, but you can find their full menu at: http://buttermilktruck.com/menu. And find them on Twitter.

Prices range from $2 to $5 dollars.
