A Cheapster's Weekend: March 5th - 7th

Friday

Deer Tick and Everest at Natural History Museum

FirstFridaysMarchPerforming in the diorama hall where all the stuffed mammals behind glass live is alt-country darlings Deer Tick and LA. – based Everest. Deer Tick won’t be back in Calif until Coachella, so catch them now! The bands go on at 8 p.m., and there is always a long line to get into the hall, so get there early.

This month’s discussion topic is Emotion Circuits in Model Organisms, or Do Flies Have Feelings? There’s two talks, the first at 6 p.m. and the second is at 7 p.m. Featuring Dr. David Anderson,  whose work in molecular genetics to map the neural circuity in mice and fruit flies can help us understand the how genes, drugs, and experience modify these circuits, in both normal behavior and in disorders such as anxiety and depression. To be honest, I’m not sure which one I’m more excited about. The music line-up or the talk.

Have you seen the 3-D ads around town for this season’s First Fridays? (Look to your left) They’re rad!

The schedule is as follows: a guided tour at 5:30 p.m., discussions at 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and the bands play from 8:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.
Cost: $15 (Concert + Museum — so sorry kids, looks like they’re prices have gone up)

Parking Tip: Get there late and the parking lots may be full. There’s free street parking on Figueroa

Saturday and Sunday:

Blow Out Sale at Rockaway Records

recordsRockaway Records in Silver Lake is having another one of their massive pop-up shop sales this Saturday and Sunday.  Thousands of CDs, LPs, and DVDs priced for 99 cents.  For people like me who enjoy spending a few hours on a weekend afternoon rummaging through a maddening amount of records and CDs, the Rockaway Records tent sales are a real treat.  I found some jewels last time I was there, including two Walt Mink albums and a great one by a band called Delta Haymax.  There were some lemons in the batch, but that is the risk you run when you base your music purchases on amusing band names or quirky album artwork.

Time: 1 p.m. – 7 p.m. both days

Rockaway Records | 2395 Glendale Blvd. | Silver Lake 90039 | 323.664.3232
